Apply by Oct. 5 for Math standards writing team

Nebraska Revised Statute 79.760.01 requires the Nebraska State Board of Education to adopt measurable academic content standards in the subject areas of reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies. The statute requires the State Board to review and update the standards every seven years. Pursuant to 79.760.01, and under the leadership of the Nebraska Department of Education, the process to review and revise Nebraska’s College and Career Standards for Mathematics will begin in Fall 2021.

The current mathematics standards were approved by the State Board of Education in 2015.

You are invited to apply to be part of the writing team. Potential candidates should consider the minimum qualifications, which include: a postsecondary degree(s) in education, PK-16 teaching experience in mathematics, and previous experience with mathematics standards, curricula, or instructional materials.

The writing process will begin in November with the completion goal of a September 2022 standards adoption by the State Board of Education. Your expertise will be utilized to revise standards to help guide and support Mathematics Education in our state.

If you are interested in being part of the writing team and meet the minimum qualifications, please complete this online application by October 5, 2021. If you have questions, please contact Deb Romanek (deb.romanek@nebraska.gov), NDE’s Math Education Specialist.

The writing will be done virtual during evenings and weekends starting in November 2021 through April 2022. Saturday, November 20, will be the first required kick-off date on zoom for about 4 hours. You are to hold possible in-person dates of Feb. 21 in Lincoln AND March 28 in Kearney. You will be part of a grade level band team of five and the team will determine their writing times to meet the deadline of the assigned task, which means the time will be flexible as you work individually and as a team.
