Policy changes affect how to register for NMSSI courses

TEAC 892 2013
TEAC 892 2013

The Teach Nebraska application, which waived the $50 graduate admission fee for current Nebraska teachers and registered teachers for courses when they applied, has been eliminated. This change means that all teachers seeking to take classes from the NMSSI must register for classes in MyRED.

Teachers new to UNL as graduate students will have to pay the $50 application fee and register for courses in MyRED after admission. If teachers know they want to earn a Master of Arts for Teachers from the Department of Mathematics, we encourage them to apply for the MAT immediately, as a degree-seeking student, and *not* apply first as a non-degree-seeking, post-baccalaureate student. Teachers who need help navigating MyRED can contact us at nebraskamath@unl.edu.

An exception is that teachers who have previously taken courses at UNL may still be able to get the $50 fee waived. On the graduate application, as a non-degree-seeking student, you will choose the “I don’t have to pay the fee” button and then leave the code field blank. They will verify whether you are eligible and if you do not qualify, they will email you to request that you pay the fee.

The NMSSI offers one-week-long graduate courses to meet your needs conveniently. We want to bring your attention to courses in danger of being canceled due to low enrollment:

Check out our course catalog (http://scimath.unl.edu/nmssi/2018/course-catalog/) to read about these courses and all of our 25 course options this summer. Spread the word about the NMSSI opportunities to help us grow our enrollment and show the importance of these courses for teachers.

For all in-person NMSSI courses, current Nebraska teachers automatically qualify for a tuition reduction equal to 20 percent of in-state, graduate tuition. Additionally, Nebraska K-12 teachers can apply for supplemental NMSSI Fellowships to further defray tuition costs for NMSSI courses (http://go.unl.edu/scimathapply).
