Three math courses offered online this fall

Take a course online this fall through the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, to earn graduate credit toward a Master of Arts for Teachers degree from the UNL Department of Mathematics or to earn graduate hours for teaching dual credit and community college courses. For teachers whose busy schedules require flexibility in order to make taking graduate courses possible, mathematics courses are offered online by the UNL Department of Mathematics on a regular basis. You can expect an online course held in the fall to cost you about $1,250. There are no fellowships available.

This fall, the department is offering THREE courses:

Math 802T: Functions, Algebra and Geometry
Math 810T: Algebra for Algebra Teachers
Math 811T: Functions for High School Teachers

These courses count toward the Master of Arts for Teachers degree.

***The UNL fall semester begins Monday, August 26, 2019.***

Option 1:
Math 802T: Functions, Algebra and Geometry, section 700
Class Number for Registration: 20568

This course is designed to help teachers gain a deep understanding of the concept of functions and the algebra and geometry concepts taught in the middle-level (through early high school) curriculum. Participants also will study measurement with an emphasis on length, area and volume. Functions, Algebra and Geometry is the second course in the Math in the Middle curriculum and has been successfully taught to both elementary and high school teachers. This course is designed for middle grades teachers; teachers cannot take this course after taking Math 810T or Math 811T.

Option 2 for secondary teachers:
Math 810T: Algebra for Algebra Teachers, section 700
Class Number 20463

The main goal of the course is to help Algebra I teachers better understand the conceptual underpinnings of school algebra, and how to leverage that understanding into improved classroom practice. Emphasis is placed on developing the habits of mind of a mathematical thinker.

Option 3 for secondary teachers:
Math 811T: Functions for High School Teachers, section 700
Class Number 5103

A study of functions in the pre-calculus, high school mathematics curriculum from an advanced viewpoint. Functions will be investigated by examining their utility in more advanced courses and applications, enabling teachers to better understand the important aspects and appropriate emphasis of a concept. Content will include polynomial, circular (trig), and exponential functions, and their connections to calculus.

Taking courses online allows teachers the flexibility to accommodate their busy schedules. Note, courses are not self-paced, and will have assignments due throughout the semester. The online environment can be very rewarding. Other teachers who have taken online courses had this to say:

* "Great quality of instruction! It was challenging, interesting and informative. I learned a lot in this class."
* "I have learned many new and interesting things in this course throughout the semester. Many of the topics will help me in my current teaching position, while others have helped to deepen my understanding and enhance my perspective in the math field."
* "I was a little worried about taking an online class since there is little direct instruction, but the course was well designed and since we were able to work with groups and attend the office hour, the tasks were very manageable."

If you have taken a course in the past year, use the instructions here for how to enroll in MyRED: http://registrar.unl.edu/registration-procedures.

How to apply:
https://www.math.unl.edu/graduate-study-mathematics-k-12-mathematics-teachers

You must submit an application to Graduate Studies to be admitted to the MAT program or to take graduate courses as a non-degree-seeking student. Be sure to select the "Mathematics (MAT)" program as your degree objective when applying for admission to the MAT program. You may also choose the Teaching Middle Level Mathematics specialization while you are applying. There is a $50 non-refundable application fee.

The MAT application to the Mathematics Department is online, using the university’s GAMES online application system until August 1, 2019. If you apply before August 1, you will receive access to the GAMES system once your UNL Graduate Studies application is complete. In that system, you will be asked to provide:

1. Official transcripts from your bachelor's degree, as well as any graduate coursework. Note: If your undergraduate degree is from UNL/UNO/UNK, it is not necessary to request a transcript.
2. A letter of intent, stating your goals for your master's degree
3. 3 letters of recommendation
4. Your teaching license (if you are not a Nebraska teacher)
5. Your resume

If you need a physical address for sending transcripts (this is sometimes this case if your transcripts are many years in the past), then please send your transcripts to:
