Seminar (April 1): Barriers to Online Formative Assessments in Undergraduate Biology Courses

Join us this afternoon as Allison Upchurch shares her research on online formative assessments.

Abstract:
Instructors rely on formative assessments (FAs) to gauge student understanding, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced a sudden shift towards online FA delivery. While instructors had delivered online FAs to students online before, the pandemic made online FAs an essential component of distance learning. Previous studies have categorized general barriers to online learning, including a framework for factors influencing student access, but there has been little work on how these barriers relate to specific learning activities, like FAs, over which instructors have control. Adapting a survey from a previous study to better fit our research question, we investigated the extent to which students experience difficulties when engaging with online FAs due to technology, social interactions, the instructor’s organization, personal engagement, and learning environment.
