Title:
Exploring Engineering Instructors’ Beliefs and Behaviors on Classroom Tests: A First Step toward Diversifying Classroom Assessment in Engineering Education
Abstract:
Tests are common in concept-heavy fundamental engineering courses (FECs). They are appropriate for certain learning outcomes, but not the ideal nor the default way to assess student learning in FECs when considering factors such as conceptual understanding toward knowledge application and well-documented alternative assessments like concept inventories and projects. My research strives to advance knowledge to inform efforts in promoting diverse assessments in FECs, focusing currently on understanding why instructors use tests in their classrooms. Leveraging a multi-case research methodology, I recruited seven instructors (cases) and analyzed their course document and interview data to explore their test beliefs and behaviors. Three groups emerged: 1) very strong convictions, 2) strong convictions but acknowledging other factors influencing test usage, and 3) moderate convictions with explicit disapproval of tests. My findings will lay the foundation toward future research studies to understand test usage from student, institution, and other perspectives. Findings will also inform practical interventions to promote use of diverse and alternative assessments in FECs.
