This afternoon, the School of Biological Sciences welcomes Dr. Luanna Prevost, from the University of South Florida, to speak about “The influence of question features in revealing student thinking in biology ”.
Abstract:
Formative assessment allows for feedback that students can use to improve their learning. Formative constructive assessments, such as writing, allow students to express their ideas in their own words and give instructors insight into student thinking. Our research group investigates how short answer written assessments can be used to examine students thinking about biology concepts in introductory biology, ecology and anatomy & physiology courses. We are interested in how students connect, transfer and apply ideas related to the core concepts of systems and structure and function. In this talk, I will discuss how the use of scaffolding, abstract and concrete features, question order, and biological context influences how students think about these core concepts. I will also discuss how instructors can harness these features to ask formative questions that direct students to confirm their understanding of scientific ideas and explicitly examine their alternative ideas during learning.
