Title:
Supporting Equitable Student and Teacher Experiences through Mathematical Modeling
Abstract:
Mathematical modeling is a research area of international interest in mathematics education. In this talk, I will highlight some of my current research projects in mathematical modeling. I will connect research in mathematical modeling to other areas of interest in mathematics education, including equitable and inclusive teaching, student conceptual understanding of mathematics topics, and teacher preparation courses. In particular, I will share findings from a research project on elementary student proportional reasoning during a modeling task, analyzed through a funds of knowledge lens. I ultimately will demonstrate that the mathematical modeling process provides rich opportunities for research and equitable experiences for students and teachers.
