Title
Computational modeling, simulations, and technology as a learning tool in life sciences education

Abstract
Computational modeling and simulations have become an integral component in life sciences research, whereby this tool enables researchers to study the complex and dynamic nature of biological processes. However, the majority of life science courses continue to rely on the traditional textbook and memorization approach. This limits the exploration and understanding the mechanisms of biological processes beyond static diagrams, and as complex and dynamic systems. To address this issue, we have developed a computational modeling platform, Cell Collective Learn, as an interactive tool to facilitate a new learning approach through building, simulating, and investigating computational models of biological processes. In this talk, we will discuss the technology, some of our simulation- and modeling-driven lessons, as well as lessons learned and challenges associated with the development, dissemination, and sustainability of education software technologies.
