Course Spotlight!: SPAN 312: Modernity in Latin American Culture

SPAN 312: Modernity in Latin American Culture
TR 12:30-1:45pm / Dr. Ingrid Robyn

This course will examine Latin American literature and culture with a focus on the issue of modernity and modernization, including topics such as the process of nation-building, development and underdevelopment, dictatorships and revolutions, and racial and
cultural identity, among others. In this course, we will see how contemporary Latin American cultural production –literature, film, visual arts, etc.– has portrayed the issues and challenges faced by Latin American countries with regard to its own process of “becoming modern” and its place within a global world, some of which date back to colonial times. This course is an excellent complement to SPAN 331 and is counted towards majors and minors in Spanish as well as our majors and minors in Ethnic Studies and minor in Latinx and Latin American Studies.

SPAN 312 is taught in Spanish. If you are fluent in Spanish, but have not completed the course prerequisites, please contact Dr. Ingrid Robyn at irobyn2@unl.edu if you're interested in taking the course.
