Tues, Jan 27 @ 5pm: CAS Inquire: “Other Futures: Poetic Uncertainty in the Age of the Algorithm”
Dr. Luis Othoniel Rosa (Spanish/Modern Languages and Literatures) will explore how poetic language disrupts the logic of technological determinism and opens pathways to alternative futures beyond ecological, economic, and political catastrophe. Drawing from ancient and contemporary poetic voices, the talk argues that poetry confuses systems of power—algorithmic, colonial, and capitalist—to reimagine and reconfigure the technologies shaping our lives. PREVENT SUICIDE is a free 60-minute in-person training for University of Nebraska-Lincoln students, faculty and staff. Anyone can help. Know the risk factors and warning signs. Learn how to intervene. During the in-person session, you will:
• Increase Your Knowledge: learn the warning signs associated with suicide.
• Name the Concerns and Ask: increase your confidence about communicating openly about suicide.
• Provide Support and Resources: expand awareness about resources.
• Connect To Help: learn how to take action when supporting others.

Wed, Jan 28 @ 5pm: Auralizing the Medieval Image: Music from the Liturgy of Sainte-Foy at Conques
UNL and UNO Medieval & Renaissance Studies programs is hosting Dr. Bissera Pentcheva, Professor of Art History at Stanford University, for a talk about her work on the Enchanted Images project at Stanford, which focuses on “Uncovering Visions of Ste. Foy at Conques in the Interactions across Music, Poetry, Art, & Dance.” Her work is informed by anthropology, music, and phenomenology, placing the attention on the changing appearance of objects and architectural spaces. She relies on film to capture this temporal animation stirred by candlelight. Another important strand of her work engages the sonic envelope of the visual–music and acoustics–and employs auralizations that digitally imprint the performance of chant with the acoustic signature of the specific interior for which it was composed. Students can explore and interact with a multitude of Recognized Student Organizations (RSOs) for social, professional and leadership interests. RSO members and officers will be on hand to provide details about their organization and answer questions from prospective new members. All Huskers are encouraged to attend this FREE event get involved in at least two organizations during their college years: one associated with academics and one associated with an interest. Kate Bingaman-Burt (UNL M.F.A. 2004) is an illustrator, educator and community builder based in Portland, Oregon. She is professor and head of graphic design at Portland State University’s School of Art + Design, where she has taught since 2008. In 2017 she founded Outlet, a risograph print studio, zine library and workshop space. (Sheldon Museum of Art)
