The University of Nebraska–Lincoln is introducing a new data science major beginning in fall 2023. This major will be housed under multiple colleges, allowing students to tailor their undergraduate studies to their specific future goals.
The data science major will prepare students with skills and competency in data analysis and interpretation, algorithm design and implementation, and problem solving. This unique program will enable students to take advantage of career opportunities across diverse fields involving data-rich, data-driven systems and applications.
In this new major, data science students will study various aspects of data science, including data collection, visualization, foundations of computational methodologies, and software and hardware applications. This program is also designed to encourage and facilitate interdisciplinary learning across colleges and subjects. The program is designed for students to pursue a double major in another discipline of interest that both complements and enhances their data science knowledge. Students will also take upper-division courses in at least one of the following focus areas:
• Artificial Intelligence
• Software Applications
• Data Pipeline
• Statistical or Mathematical Modeling
• Applied Data Science: Sociology, Natural Resources, or Journalism + Humanities
The data science curriculum equips students not only with technical and analytical skills but also the valuable interpersonal necessary for success in any career path. By completing courses and projects that emphasize the importance of professional development and teamwork, graduates of this program will be well prepared to bring their data science expertise and experience into a wide variety of fields and industries.
