You have probably heard that dairy farmers are dumping milk on their farms. This is due to reduced demand for fluid milk to make dairy products for the food industry including restaurants, fast food, and schools. Attached is the guidance Nebraska DEE issued on April 5, 2020. There are no new regulations or exceptions to existing regulations in this document. Essentially the guidance issued provides recommendations for dairy farmers that are dumping milk. These recommendations include apply milk to the field using agronomic rates, incorporate the milk within the soil to reduce potential odor issues especially with the warmer weather coming, and track the amount and location of milk applied to fields.

Additional information is being developed by Nebraska Extension. Contact Kim Clark, Extension Dairy Educator, if you have any questions or concerns related to milk dumping or alternative uses for the milk.
