USGS Nebraska Water Science Center Opportunities

The USGS Nebraska Water Science Center has a couple vacancies that will be advertised on USA Jobs, February 1 and 8.

Pathways Internship in Hydrology

One of the vacancies is for a Pathways Intern and would be for a student trainee in Hydrology which will be open for students to apply February 8 - 22. They are looking for 1 - 2 students. Students typically work full time over the summer and longer school breaks, and part time, around their class schedule, during the semesters. Students typically would be in some sort of natural resources / geology / hydrology program of study, and gain valuable professional experience (and decent pay) while they are working on their degree. Frequently these candidates are pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree but we have had graduate students in this program as well.  For any who might not be familiar with the USGS, here's a video they might enjoy:  USGS: More than a Workplace - YouTube.

Physical Scientist for the Groundwater Investigations Team

The second position is for a Physical Scientist on our Groundwater Investigations Team, which is a permanent position and being advertised simultaneously at the GS 7, 9, and 11 levels which will be open February 1 - 15. Typically a GS7 hire would have completed a Bachelor’s degree, GS9 would have completed a Master’s, and GS11 would have either experience or education beyond a Master’s level (see full description of Physical Scientist qualifications here). The specific duties will be determined based on the qualifications of the selected candidate and correspond to the different GS levels. The main duties of this position involve groundwater and water-quality studies, including field work / sample collection, analyzing and interpreting results, writing scientific reports to communicate results, and depending on level, the development of scientific studies of groundwater that will meet the needs of USGS NEWSC cooperators. This type of permanent position being open to add to our team does not happen too often, so we’re looking forward to some great applicants.
