Hello Geology Majors,

I hope that you are doing well as we roll into the sixth week of the Fall 2022 semester. I know that the first round of midterm exams is still in-progress, and I know that the first midterm exam in many courses can be quite challenging. Thus, I wanted to discuss resilience, well-being, and mental health this week.

Big Red Resilience and Well-being is your on campus authority on resilience and well-being. Resilience is a skill set of behaviors, thoughts and actions you can develop to help manage change, hardship, and disappointment. Resilience in practice is being disappointed in the results of your first midterm exam, but knowing that you can move on, improve, and be successful. Persisting and growing through adversity enhances flexibility, overall functioning, and well-being. Persistence in practice is completing regular readings, homework assignments, and study hours week over week knowing that you are learning and will become stronger.

Big Red Resilience and Well-being provides fun events, innovative education, and dynamic services to help students understand emotions, manage stress, build strength, connect with others, develop grit and navigate transitions. Well-being Ambassadors can help you develop resilience and persistence across the 10 dimensions of well-being. Be sure to check our their Well-being events at https://events.unl.edu/resilience/upcoming.

Developing resilience and persistence will help with your mental health, but some times you just need to talk to someone about everything that you are experiencing. During those tough times, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is available to help you. CAPS offers a wide range of services that vary from individual counseling to couples counseling to support groups. Making your first appointment is a webpage that explains how to access CAPS services for your first time. If you need to speak with a counselor about an immediate crisis or urgent need, call 402.472.7450 and follow the prompts to speak with a counselor who is on call.

Remember, I am help to you be successful academically, professionally, and personally, so I can help you connect with resources at UNL if you don't know where to go. While I am not a trained counselor, I am more than happy to listen and provide support if I can.

Best wishes, Doug
