Geology Student Spotlight
Name: Leah Stirrup
Majors: Anthropology, Geology, and Spanish
Year in School: Junior
Where are you from?
I am from Littleton, Colorado.
What gets you excited about Geology?
I love being out in the field. I plan to be an archaeologist, so this is a relevant major to what I plan to pursue in the future.
Favorite Geology class or instructor so far? Why?
My favorite geology class was either the Walker trip or the Antarctic Geoscience class. I was able to be out in the field with the Walker trip and camp and see everything in person which is what you don't get to do in the classroom. Regarding the Antarctica class, I had never taken anything like it before and I loved learning about a completely different environment than the one we live in. I also get to work with Dr. Harwood which has opened up some really cool opportunities for me.
What are you excited about doing after graduation?
I am excited to go to grad school and pursue a Masters in archaeology at either NAU or New Mexico State.
What is a goal you have accomplished as a Husker?
I currently am part of two research projects which is something that I am very proud of. I work for Dr. Harwood (Antarctic sediment cores) and volunteer for Dr. Geib (studying lignite).
What do you wish you would have known when you started as a Geology Major that you know now?
It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to get through this major. Experience with Excel also pays off.
What do you hope to cross off your “bucket list” in the next few years?
I hope to have my Masters in the next few years studying the Hohokam people in the Tucson/Phoenix/Flagstaff area.
