Hello Geology Majors,
I hope you are doing well during this fifth week of classes. I expect that you midterm exams or papers due this week or next week, so I imagine that you are busy studying and writing right now. I hope that your work goes well and that you are using your resources.
This week, I want to explain how these newsletters are structured to help you understand where to find opportunities and information. First, each newsletter will start with a message for me, and the content of this message will change at least somewhat from week to week. Second, the newsletter will have upcoming major specific events, meetings, or opportunities that I want to attract your attention to for that week. Separating my message and any important major specific items from the remainder of the newsletter will be a note about the academic calendar and important semester dates coming soon (like the Pass/No Pass deadline). After the academic calendar information, there would be a mix of activities, meetings, groups, and other items that have been sent my way.
An announcement from our CAS Career Coaches will always start the portion of the newsletter dedicated to opportunities for gaining experience in a variety of ways: research, internships, jobs, service, leadership, or education abroad. Gaining experience outside of the classroom is one of the most things you can do alongside your coursework, and this newsletter is full of things that can help you do that. The last two items of the newsletter will normally be any new job and internship announcements that I can find online (time permitting) and information about getting help.
Each week, I put in a fair amount of time building these newsletter emails to attempt to make them something worth your time to read. Additionally, these emails deliver a bunch of information that could be sent as multiple single item emails, so the newsletter is a way to help you receive fewer emails overall.
Newsletter Feedback
If you ever have questions or feedback about anything in the weekly newsletter, please let me know. Sometimes, it is difficult for me to know if these emails are actually being read and/or found useful.
Best wishes, Doug
