Our students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln have incredible and impactful global experiences during their time on campus. This section features those who have been highlighted across campus in the last month for their accomplishments, experiences, and Nebraska career.

This month, discover some of our students’ global stories, from interning at the U.N. to studying abroad and developing leadership skills thousands of miles from home.


UNL student uses study abroad experiences to teach refugees English

Miranda Kuzela has loved learning about different languages and cultures for as long as she can remember. So when she discovered the opportunity to travel to Russia through the U.S. Department of State’s Critical Language Scholarship Program for the summer of 2017, she knew it was the chance of a lifetime.

From refugee to intern, UN shaped South Sudanese student's life

University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Law student Gatluak Ramdiet spent six years in a United Nations refugee camp after fleeing south Sudan in 2000. Now, he graduates in May after completing an internship at the U.N. in 2018.

Hawra Mohammed Carves Her Own Path

Hawra Mohammed journeyed more than 7,000 miles from her home in Muscat, Oman, to Lincoln, Nebraska, to learn the family business of accounting. However, moving far away from home went beyond academics, and she learned to Start Something on her path to independence.

CASNR program helps Rwandan students become world agricultural leaders

Before he started college, Rodrigue Mugenga knew he wanted to make a difference and give back to his home country of Rwanda in any way possible. Mugenga, a senior integrated science major at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, discovered and applied for the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources’ Undergraduate Scholarship Program, or CUSP, when it was created in 2015.

Zhang wins 2019 National Young Artists Competition

Michelle Yin Zhang, a doctoral piano student in the Glenn Korff School of Music, has won the 2019 National Young Artists Competition in the college piano division. Originally from Shenzhen, China, Zhang has won several piano competitions in her home country and is in her last year at UNL.

UNL's first student learns from cultural differences in Cameroon study abroad program

Chelsea Akyeampong, a junior global studies and political science double major at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, found cultural challenges and lessons in her study abroad trip to Cameroon. The first Nebraskan student to complete the program, she emerged with a new look on culture and open to challenges.
