Boost Your Network: Assess & Diversify
Networking research reveals two key principles:
1. We naturally gravitate towards people like ourselves (Self-Similarity).
2. We build networks with those we spend time with (Proximity).
While these principles feel natural, they limit your network's diversity. To expand your horizons, assess your current network:
List five people in each category:
- Connectors: Introduce you to new people.
- Mentors: Offer guidance and support.
- Subject Matter Experts (SMEs): Share specialized knowledge.
- Peers: Individuals you can collaborate with.
Reflect and Strategize:
- Identify gaps: Which network categories need growth?
- Seek diversity: Does your network include a variety of perspectives?
- Reconnect with lapsed connections.
- Plan for accountability: How will you maintain these relationships?
Remember, networking is about building mutually beneficial connections. With effort, you can create a network that supports your professional goals. Visit https://www.coursera.org/articles/networking-tips to learn more about growing your network.
