Join the conversation as Flower Darby, Director of Teaching for Student Success at Northern Arizona University, presents Small Teaching Online: Fostering Connections to Improve Student Engagement and Learning. Darby has over 23 years of teaching and instructional design experience in higher education and is an enthusiastic advocate for student success through learner-centered design and excellence in teaching.
In this live webcast presentation, attendees will learn how small teaching can help faculty and students address the unique challenges of online learning. Small teaching involves minor changes or adjustments that result in significant learning gains. Attendees will focus on how educators can make a major impact in student's learning and engagement by implementing strategies based in neuroscience.
Attendees will leave the presentation with:
- An understanding of the unique challenges of online learning.
- Eight practical strategies to strengthen social and cognitive connection in students.
- New strategies to connect and engage students to improve student success.
In-person attendees are invited for lunch in the Platte River Room in the University of Nebraska–Lincoln City Campus Union at 11:30 a.m.

Campus Conversations is an online professional development series focused on key topics related to education in the face of rapidly changing technology. The event takes place multiple times throughout the academic year as each campus partners with the University of Nebraska Online (NU Online) to bring nationally recognized speakers to share information about topics of interest to those involved in online learning. These events are offered free of charge to University of Nebraska faculty and staff.
