The University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s MLK Week celebration will feature a moderated conversation with Dr. Bernice A. King, daughter of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King.
The university will honor the legacy of the iconic civil rights leader with a series of events Jan. 25-29. This year’s theme is “Continue to speak out against all forms of injustice to yourselves and others, and you will set a mighty example for your children and for future generations.” The celebration will offer events for students, faculty and staff, as well as members of the Lincoln community. The week will culminate with the virtual MLK Commemoration at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 28 featuring the conversation with King, a global thought leader, orator and peace advocate. She was appointed CEO of the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change in January 2012. From this position — once held by her mother — she continues to advance her parents’ legacy of Kingian nonviolence, which she has rebranded Nonviolence365.
The 2021 Chancellor’s Fulfilling the Dream Award will be presented during the commemoration. The event will also feature performances by the Nebraska Repertory Theatre and the St. Louis Black Repertory Company.
