The Graduate Student Assembly held its October meeting on Tuesday, October 5. Topics discussed included opportunities for at-large representatives to GSA, unionization, upcoming events for international graduate students, and more.

The GSA has several at-large representative positions open. If serving as a GSA representative is something you're interested in, contact GSA VP of Representation Venn Jemkur at vprepresentationgsa@unl.edu.

In open forum, the Assembly heard from a representative of Unionize UNL. For a full summary, see the official meeting minutes. Unionize UNL is a collective of graduate student employees seeking to improve working conditions at the university. Currently, they're working on a signature drive to gauge interest for pursuing legal unionization. For more information, follow Unionize UNL on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, or visit unionizeunl.org.

GSA at-large representative Xi Xuen Tay also spoke about a couple of upcoming events to be hosted by the International Student Advisory Board (ISAB). Read her message below:

"ISAB is hosting a series of Community Chats where international students can raise their voices and share their experiences in a student-led, safe, and brave space. The student voices and insights will then be used to inform practices and changes for international student support on campus, such as the International Student Experience (ISE) survey (or international student climate survey), and further Goal #3 of the Forward Together: A Global Strategy for UNL. We will have 2 more sessions, please RSVP to attend. We also have an online, anonymous form where you can tell us your experiences.

  • Friday, October 15, 12-1 p.m. at Ubuntu Room
  • Monday, October 25, 6-7 p.m. at OASIS Lounge
Finally, be on the lookout for a GSA grad student social event with free food and coffee later this month. More details to come.
