Traveling this Summer?

Time to travel
Time to travel

Summer has arrived, so here are some reminders as you make travel plans – whether it's a quick day trip to Omaha, a week in New York City, or visiting back home.

International Travel

All international travel should be carefully considered as to the necessity of travel (attending an academic conference vs. leisure travel). If your travel is not an emergency or isn't necessary for your academic program, you should consider staying in the United States this summer. If your visa is expired, especially if your country of citizenship is on the entry restriction proclamation, international travel should be deferred until further notice.

If you must travel internationally, make sure you request a travel signature from ISSO prior to departure and that all your immigration documents are valid. When re-entering the U.S., have the following documents ready for inspection:

  • Passport (must be valid at least six months into the future)
  • I-20 or DS-2019
  • Unofficial transcripts or enrollment verification letter

Be prepared for longer inspection times and questioning at the port of entry. Your belongings, including your electronic devices, may also be subject to search.

Domestic Travel

Travel within the United States is always permitted for international students. This includes to all 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and all other U.S. territories.

When traveling domestically, especially if you travel outside Nebraska, make sure to carry your:

  • Passport (must be valid at least six months into the future)
  • I-20 or DS-2019
  • I-94

It is also strongly encouraged to obtain a state-issued ID (or Driver’s License, if you are eligible) as an additional form of identification when traveling domestically. This ID can also be used when flying domestically (don’t forget your other documents!). More information on how to obtain a state ID is available on the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicle’s website.

If you are planning on taking a road trip this summer (one of the best ways of seeing the United States!), make sure to read these summer driving tips before departing.
