Spring 2025 highlights

Spring 2025 was nothing short of fun, spirited, and educational. We were on a roll – and guess what? You loved the events. Don’t just take our word for it – we’ve got the receipts!

From social to cultural, personal to professional, and community-building events, we aimed to create spaces for international students to connect – not only with each other, but with domestic students and the broader UNL community.

Travel Social Events

Henry Doorly Zoo Trip – Omaha
One of our most popular off-campus social events was the trip to the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha. This destination consistently draws high interest – we always run out of seats!

Recognized as one of the best zoos in the U.S., it features state-of-the-art exhibits and thrilling adventures. This trip wasn’t just about sightseeing; it blended cultural immersion, environmental education, and social connection. Students explored global ecosystems and wildlife, deepening their understanding of biodiversity and conservation.

Beyond learning, it was a much-needed break from academic demands, boosting mental wellness, reducing isolation, and fostering friendships. One student summed it up best:

“It felt like a day off with friends, but we left with so much more knowledge and connection.”

Kansas City Day Trip
Next up, our exciting day trip to Kansas City – another top favorite this semester! We understand that traveling to new places can be daunting, especially for international students, so we made it easy and affordable.

Known for its vibrant downtown, scenic fountains, and cultural flair, Kansas City offered students a dynamic mix of modern life and historic charm. Highlights included the free streetcar, Union Station, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, and local shopping.
This urban adventure helped students experience American city life in a safe, guided, and exciting way – building memories, confidence, and community along the way.

“Incredible trip! Thank you for all you do.”

Cultural Cuisine Night Series

This semester, our signature Cultural Cuisine Night Series was a massive hit, with all three events selling out!

  • Lunar New Year Cuisine Night featured a stunning dragon performance with drumming and traditional celebration.
  • Afro-Caribbean Cuisine Night included a performance by PANgea steel drum band, colorful table settings, playful decorations, and a themed photo booth straight out of the islands.
  • Mediterranean Cuisine Night showcased vibrant decor and a henna tattoo booth hosted by the MENA Student Organization.

These events brought together students, staff, faculty, and community members in celebration of global cuisine and culture. More than just dinner, they were immersive cultural experiences that fostered understanding, connection, and a lot of laughter.

"Afro-Caribbean night was phenomenal!"

"Cultural cuisine is awesome. We need more events like that every month."

Life in Lincoln Series
In collaboration with Student Leadership, Involvement, and Community Engagement (SLICE)

These Friday-night adventures gave students the opportunity to explore Lincoln’s culture and community. Here’s a glimpse into some of the most memorable moments:

Lincoln Stars Hockey Game
A classic American sporting experience – fast, energetic, and so much fun! For many international students, it was their first hockey game, and it quickly turned into an unforgettable memory filled with cheers, bonding, and team spirit.

Rhythms of the World Dance Night
This event was a joyful celebration of global music and dance. From traditional rhythms to modern moves, the night was filled with energy, intercultural appreciation, and community spirit.

Lincoln Symphony Orchestra
An evening of iconic movie scores from the Star Wars universe, the symphony introduced students to the beauty of live orchestral music. It was a stirring, enriching experience that fostered a deep appreciation for the arts.

Easter Egg Hunt & Canvas Painting
A heartwarming and inclusive event, especially loved by children of our student families. Students enjoyed an authentic American tradition, followed by a creative painting exchange. (Pro tip: many discovered they weren’t quite Picasso!)

"I enjoyed everything especially the easter egg hunt because it was fun with kids.”

“World Cup” Soccer Tournament
This electrifying event featured representation from 8 countries. Though matches were shorter than the standard 90 minutes, excitement ran high!

Results:
3rd Place – Iran
2nd Place – Ghana
1st Place – Nigeria

It was about more than just soccer – it was about pride, teamwork, and celebration of cultural diversity.

"Made new friends from a different country and adapted to the system here."

"Every single event was extremely interesting and I learned so many lessons."

International Graduation Reception

We ended the semester with a bittersweet celebration – our International Graduation Reception. It was a proud moment to honor the hard work and achievements of our international graduates.

Family members flew in, proud smiles filled the room, and the atmosphere was filled with joy, laughter, and meaningful goodbyes. For the ISSO, it was a moment of pride and a little sadness – we’re excited to see our students go change the world, but we’ll miss them dearly.

"You have been a remarkable support for the international student community."

Wrapping Up

We hope this recap gave you a glimpse of the many memories, friendships, and experiences created this semester. Every event was designed with one goal: to support and celebrate our international student community.

Here’s to an incredible Spring 2025 – and even more to come. Thank you for being a part of it all.
