CalMatters is committed to training the next generation of journalists and our interns will be guided by seasoned staffers to make meaningful contributions during their stay.
Our internships run 10-12 weeks and interns will be placed throughout our organization. Some of the opportunities we offer focus on reporting, photography, videography, web development and audience engagement. Most positions are based in Sacramento, although staffers are placed throughout the state. At this time, we are offering remote internships but some positions necessitate travel. Our internships are paid.
For Fall 2020, we are offering the following internships:
> Health reporting - Seeking an ambitious journalist who can dive into records, scour studies and tap critical sources to help our health team track the spread of coronavirus and other health care challenges. We’re looking for someone who can contribute to a better understanding of health care delivery in California. This person should be a good collaborator to help reporters tell stories in creative and compelling ways.
> Project reporting / California Divide - Want to explore income inequality and what’s happening to California’s working population in a post-COVID world? Help our talented network of journalists across the state on the California Divide, a special collaboration among five media outlets aimed at raising awareness about poverty — and potential solutions — through in-depth journalism and community outreach. The ideal candidate will be able to report on multiple platforms and capture the experience of four out of 10 Californians living in or near poverty.
> Photography - We’re looking for a student or early-career photojournalist with a unique eye and strong storytelling skills who is interested in state policy and how it affects everyday people. You’ll share coverage responsibilities, receive regular critiques from our staff photographer, and have the opportunity to work with reporters and editors across the newsroom.
> Revenue development - We’re looking for a talented news lover with strong research, writing and communication skills and a keen interest in the business of journalism, specifically the evolving strategies behind building a sustainable business model for nonprofit news. You’ll work with our three-person revenue team, and report to the publisher. You’ll have the chance to learn about what constitutes a successful business model in the dynamic and growing nonprofit news business. You will also learn about cultivating membership, monetizing news products and events, and researching, building and cultivating a pipeline of major donors, institutions and foundations.
> Audience engagement / elections - Want to help inform California voters by directing them to the stories they should see and read before heading to the polls? We’re looking for a social media-savvy journalist who can target our richly reported stories and election guides in front of a wide audience. Collaborate with editorial staff on maximizing reach and target promotions to drive membership and newsletter subscriptions.
The internship is for 12 weeks starting in September, $15/hour for undergraduate students and $16/hour for graduate students. CalMatters is committed to diversity and especially encourages members of underrepresented communities to apply.
*Applications are due July 26th.
