Choose journalism, creative writing or playwriting

It's hard to imagine a better place to study storytelling -- journalistic or fictional -- than Northern Ireland, the land of storytellers.

In the summer of 2013, the Institute for Education in International Media (ieiMedia) will sponsor a summer program that allows students to explore multimedia storytelling, playwriting or creative writing in Armagh, the oldest city in Northern Ireland.

The four-week program, which runs June 27-July 28, 2013, is open to students and recent graduates from all schools. All majors are welcome.

The program
Students will study the history of the region, the culture of Ireland and the politics of the late Troubles, the time of conflict between British rule and the quest for Irish autonomy. They will then work with professional writers or journalists on an individual project in the medium of their choice.
Each student will choose from one of three tracks -- multimedia journalism, creative writing or playwriting.

Multimedia Journalism
Students in the journalism track will study with a pair of veteran journalism educators -- multimedia journalist Jack Zibluk of Southeast Missouri State University and writer Doug Cumming of Washington & Lee University. Students will gain professional skills in still photography, video, reporting and writing for the web and learn by doing, using the legendary city as a laboratory for reporting multimedia news features. The course is designed to replicate, to some degree, the intensive experience of a foreign correspondent. This track is designed for students with some journalism training, either academic coursework or experience working on a student or professional publication.

Students in the journalism track will earn 3 transferable journalism credits from Southeast Missouri State University.

The details
The cost of the program is $4,995 plus airfare and includes:
Tuition for 3 transferable credits from Southeast Missouri State University OR tuition for 3 credits from the University of Baltimore (the latter is available to University of Maryland System students only)
Housing in a modern youth hotel with cooking facilities
Cultural events, including tours and performances
Welcome and farewell dinners
Applicants who don't need college credit can enroll in the program for $3,995 without credit.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis through Feb. 15, 2013 (or later if space is available). Apply early to secure your spot!
