Description: Position Summary:

The Production Assistant, Online will play an important role editing and creating online content for the web site of the Public Insight Network. http://www.publicinsightnetwork.org. The position will support the Associate Editor, Online and reporting staff.

This is a part time (4 days/week), grant funded position and will end on June 30, 2013.

Position Responsibility:
• Copy-edit stories and features for spelling, grammar, style consistency and general accuracy on a regular basis.
• Process photos for stories – including cropping, resizing, color adjusting, etc. in Photoshop.
• Prepare text, photos and audio for publication.
• Support social media strategy through Twitter, Facebook and other tools as needed.
• Source images and photos for stories.
• Provide routine site maintenance functions as needed.
• Assist with production of online projects as needed.
• Coordinate with news staff to gather information for website as directed.
• Follow established workflow and production routines.
• Create online content under supervision of the Associate Editor.
• Other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience:

• Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English or similar field or equivalent experience.
• 1-2 years experience in writing, editing or online production work – could be obtained through internships.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

• Interest in and knowledge of producing online news.
• Excellent language skills, including writing, editing, and proofreading.
• Ability to work effectively under pressure and to meet deadlines.
• Ability to work efficiently with limited direct supervision.
• Consistent and reliable attendance is an essential component of the job.
• Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with colleagues in multiple content areas.
• Ability to maintain productive and positive communication with co-workers.
• Proficiency in preparing material for online use
• Proficiency in the use of social media tools such as Twitter and Facebook
• Familiarity with local and national news.
• Knowledge of basic Web production standards and tools (i.e.: HTML, content management systems)
• Strong Photoshop skills and a good photojournalistic sense; experience with digital photography and video a plus.
• Comfort with learning and using new software and technology.
• Strong interpersonal skills.
• Strong online researching skills.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

• Journalism experience or education.
• Copy editing experience.
• First-rate writing and editing skills.
• Hands-on experience in Web production at school or in the workplace.
• Experience with and interest in citizen journalism.

Schedule:

The hours for this position are roughly 9am-5pm Tuesday through Friday.
