ABOUT HOLTZHAUSEN:


Derina Holtzhausen joined Oklahoma State University as professor and director of the School of Media & Strategic Communications in 2008. Previously she served as graduate director and associate professor at the School of Mass Communication at the University of South Florida, which she joined in 1997 after earning her Ph.D. in communication science at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1996. She earned her M.A. from the University of South Africa and her B.A. and B.A. Hons. from the University of Pretoria, South Africa.

Her research interests are in the area of communication practice and, among others, cover internal communication and the impact of organizational variables on communication practice, public relations as a form of activism, international communication practice and strategic communication. She served as the co-founder and co-editor of the International Journal of Strategic Communicationfrom 2007 – 2012 and published 30 peer reviewed articles, book chapters and encyclopedia entries since earning her PhD. She won the 2002 Pathfinder Award from the Institute of Public Relations for her work in postmodern public relations and the 2012 PRIDE award from the National Communication Association for her book titled Public Relations as Activism. Postmodern Approaches to Theory and Practice. She is co-editor of the Handbook of Strategic Communication, currently in press.

Before moving to the United State she was a communication practitioner in South Africa for 25 years, which included roles as a partner in a public relations and advertising agency, head of corporate communication of the South African Tourism Board, and executive consultant for internal communication at the ABSA Financial Services Group.
