Scripps Howard Foundation Internships Program

The Scripps Howard Foundation realizes journalism and mass communication students need internships to develop their career potential but knows not every outstanding student can afford to participate in an unpaid – or even paid – opportunity. That’s why we offer through selected schools
$3,000 internship stipends and $500 follow-up scholarships or grants.

HOW OUR INTERNSHIP/SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM WORKS:

1. STUDENT SELECTION-The school selects the recipient of our stipend and our offer of a follow-up scholarship or grant from among the school’s most promising students or recent graduates. Students selected for our program are ideally rising juniors and seniors; however, recent graduates who have not found employment are eligible as are graduate students. Not eligible: previous program participants, also children or dependents of internship coordinators or others associated with the program.

2. INTERNSHIP PLACEMENT SITE SELECTION-The student secures a summer internship that meets these criteria: minimum of 10 weeks for a minimum of 35 hours per week; placement must be in one of the five areas outlined in our Internship Descriptions document (multimedia, news producer, digital, entrepreneurship, social media/digital marketing sales); may be a paid or unpaid internship; may or may not be at a Scripps operating unit (sites listed at http://www.scripps.com); may not be at a Scripps operating unit’s direct competitor; no freelance arrangements will be approved.

3. SCHOOL INTERNSHIP COORDINATOR’S RESPONSIBILITY–Approve the student’s internship site selection and/or assist in finding an appropriate site. By April 15, 2016, return the Foundation’s completed placement form to Dr. Battinto Batts Jr., journalism fund director. Request an extension if necessary. Coordinator should advise student that pre-employment contingencies (i.e. drug/alcohol testing, background check) are likely and findings could result in denial of the placement; advise also that most employers will require a valid driver’s license.

4. FORMS FOR STUDENT AND SUPERVISOR-
Following Foundation approval of the completed placement form, an Internship Agreement and required Internal Revenue Service form are sent by the Foundation to the student for completion and return; the Foundation also sends a Verification of Internship form to the placement site supervisor for completion and return. The site supervisor also receives from the Foundation a copy of the U.S. Department of Labor Wage and Hour Division’s Fair Labor Standards Act as it relates to internships and a copy of the agreement the student is required to sign.

5. PAYMENT OF STIPEND - Upon receipt and approval of the student’s signed agreement and the supervisor’s signed verification, the Foundation sends a check for the $3,000 stipend directly to the student at the address he or she provides. Included with the check are instructions for the student to apply for the $500 scholarship or grant upon completion of the internship.

6. FOLLOW-UP SCHOLARSHIP OR GRANT APPLICATION -
By Sept. 30, 2016, interns who are returning to school full-time in the fall must submit their application for the $500 follow-up scholarship; interns who have graduated must also submit their application for the $500 follow-up grant by this deadline. The scholarship payment will be sent to the intern’s school account; the grant will be paid directly to the intern. Application instructions are included with the $3,000 check. Applying for the follow-up $500 is the student’s responsibility.

7. SCHOLARSHIP/GRANT PAYMENT-Upon successful review of the intern’s scholarship or grant application, a check for a $500 scholarship is sent to the school bursar’s office for deposit in the student’s account. If the intern has graduated, the check for the $500 grant is sent directly to him or her.
