Designer, National Geographic

The Designer is responsible for the design and visual quality of all assigned components of the Explorer Magazine Program. This includes magazines, teacher’s guides, interactive whiteboard lessons, digital and projectable editions.

Responsibilities
CONCEPTUALIZATION AND PLANNING: As requested, participates in product conceptualization for print and technology components. Maintains working knowledge of state, common core, and national standards, with a focus on those standards that are applicable to the assigned component and/or grade level. Collaborates and communicates with colleagues in Curriculum and in other departments to assure consistency within programs and across product lines. (5%)
PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT: Works closely with the Design Director to design for the Explorer Magazine Program and other projects as assigned. Designs covers, and interior layouts for the publications. Act as primary designer for Explorer Magazine, grade 2 and digital editions of all magazines. Stay abreast of trends and new techniques being utilized in the industry, and incorporate those elements into the publication's designs. Work closely with Media Manage, color separator, and production team to achieve best results and cost-savings; including applying soft-proofing techniques for optimal color reproduction and fully utilizing high-end photo software. (85%)
LEADERSHIP: Understands Society, and department vision. Is aware of program goals and how they support the overall NGS strategy. (5%)
STAFF DEVELOPMENT: Demonstrates self-awareness by identifying areas for skills improvement and professional growth. Contributes feedback for performance evaluations, as requested. (5%)

Minimum Education Required
Bachelor's degree or equivalent with art and design training.

Minimum Years and Type of Experience
Plus 3-5 years of print design and production, 1-3 years of digital publication design. Proven design eye with ability to consistently achieve high quality design

Knowledge & Skill Required
Expertise in InDesign, Illustrator, and other design-related programs
Layout skills required
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Experience in working collaboratively.
Track record in successfully completing projects.
Experience within the K-6 publishing industry preferred.
