Education Reporter, The Daily Nonpareil (Council Bluffs, IA)

The education reporter for The Daily Nonpareil covers primarily K-12 education in eight counties in southwest Iowa, ranging from districts with several thousand students to those with only a couple hundred. Other areas of coverage include Iowa Western Community College, Iowa School for the Deaf, the Iowa Board of Regents and the Green Hills Area Education Agency. This position requires some nights for meeting coverage. All reporters are in a rotation to cover one night per week and one weekend per month, in addition to work on other special projects.
The Daily Nonpareil is in Council Bluffs, Iowa, located just across the Missouri River from Omaha, Nebraska, and is part of the BH Media Group, a Berkshire Hathaway company.
Required Skills
The candidate should have experience meeting deadlines, in addition to some familiarity with posting to a news website. Other needed skills include a working knowledge of social media, strong news judgment and proficiency with AP style.
Additionally, successful applicants will have to pass a drug test, criminal background check and motor vehicle record screening.
Required Experience
The candidate should have at least one to two years of professional experience designing pages in a newsroom setting, including college media or internships, though that can be waived with sufficient proof of skills.
