Whitman College seeks an Assistant Director of Sports Communications to assist in managing all sports information and communication needs of the department. Reporting to the Sports Communications Director, the Assistant Director is responsible for managing all aspects of varsity sport home contests, providing supervision and oversight of the 40+ student staff and using discretion and judgment in managing the game management budget. Additionally, the Assistant Director will lead the athletics department's social media outreach, and will be in charge of the live-streaming production for home athletic events. The Assistant Director is expected to make decisions and exercise judgment in presenting athletic programs in ways consistent with the high academic standards and values of the College. This is a full-time, 12 months per year, self-directed position, with minimal supervision. Principal accountabilities include:
Schedule and supervise event management staff; set up, tear down.
Assist the SCD with oversight of sports statistics and social media communication.
Assist SCD in writing and posting athletic stories.
Responsible for technology use, including digital video streaming, sharing, and archiving.
Responsible to oversee event management budget.
Other duties as assigned by the SCD.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess a Bachelor’s and preferably some experience in a sports information environment, athletic conference office, or related work. General journalism experience is desirable. A strong commitment to the student-athlete concept and a working knowledge of NCAA Division III intercollegiate sports is important. Required: Working knowledge of rules, strategies, principles and method of scoring for the majority of Whitman sports, including soccer, volleyball, cross country, basketball, lacrosse, swimming, baseball, tennis and golf; computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite, desk top publishing, web site design and maintenance, social media tools, and statistical scoring software packages (Statcrew and live stat programs and SideArm CMS), digital video technologies; ability to oversee student interns and employees; superior organizational capabilities; excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills. An ability to listen, synthesize information, build relationships with a wide range of people, and influence key stakeholders is essential. A strong work ethic and ability to multi-task are essential. A reputation as a positive team player with a sense of humor, and a personal commitment to collaboration and integrity are highly desirable. Must have the demonstrated ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-heavy environment.
