Full-Time Backpack Journalist, Nebraska Department of Roads, Lincoln

The selected individual will serve as a traveling photographer, videographer, and journalist for the Nebraska Department of Roads.


Examples of Work:
-Photographs and videos a variety of subjects, materials and activities, using many types of cameras, lights and other equipment.

-Serves as liaison to other divisions and the districts in planning or coordinating photographic activities and services specifically for NDOR highway projects, points of interest to the public and important partnerships. Potential work with other agencies across the State is possible.

-Prepares or assists in preparing visual segment of presentations (public meetings, training, promotional, etc.) using graphic design. Processes or arranges processing of all types of film, including aerial prints, and photogrammetric plotter plates. Maintains all photography equipment and lab provisions, troubleshooting when necessary. Will safely move, drag, lift, load, and unload various objects, equipment, materials and supplies (risers, photography/video equipment, lights, etc.), with or without assistance.

-Interviews subject matter experts, writes, designs, composes, edits, researches, photographs, compiles and/or selects written/visual materials for multimedia uses, exhibits, displays for specific purposes and their target audience.

-Researches and determines scope, nature, and target audience for NDOR's multimedia graphics and public information functions and activities, to facilitate development and implementation of an appropriate approach for dissemination of public information.

-Drafts, coordinates and reviews public information-related work; works with technical production and communication support staff to arrange and facilitate completion of assigned projects, ensure accuracy and completeness of writing, information processing, photography, graphics and printing or production of quality end product.

-Assists, coordinates, or provides division and agency personnel with communication support for special promotional projects, marketing campaigns, safety efforts, etc., as assigned.

-Coordinates internal photo and video coverage of official activities and events, facilitates co-action with other program activities, keeps division and relevant staff informed; ensures that division and agency goals, public information priorities and communication objectives are achieved.

-Prepares a reasonable annual operating budget for the photography and videography area. Consults with videographer and order supplies; prepare reports for Services Manager, accordingly.

- Travel is required for this position across the State of Nebraska to perform any of the functions mentioned above.

Qualifications / Requirements:

REQUIREMENTS: Bachelors degree in journalism, public relations, communications, advertising, creative writing or related field. Experience in developing, planning and managing public relations/publicity campaigns, mass media communication activities or public information programs may substitute for the education on a year for year basis.

PREFERRED: Bachelors degree in communication arts, photography, photo journalism, or related field. At least two years of practical experience in field photography, content writing, photo journalism, multimedia graphic arts and sciences, publication multi graphics, news media, event planning and/or still and video photography. Proven success in full content media production (photography and writing). Expertise in current social and business media. Demonstrated presentation skills.

OTHER: Valid driver's license or the ability to provide independent authorized transportation is required. Regular and reliable attendance is also required. Applicants selected for interviews will be required to submit a portfolio that shows past work examples to include writing, editing, graphics, artwork, design materials, photographs, etc.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of photographic, video and processing techniques and principles. Must be able to travel and available for overnight stays, as needed. Ability to produce quality work, i.e., creative, professional, timely, appropriate and relevant photographic images. Ability to communicate confidently and professionally. Ability to multitask as a team member, a self-motivated organizer, and information coordinator. Must be able to safely, move, lift, load and unload various materials and supplies with or without assistance.
