Communications Intern - Society of Professional Journalists (Indianapolis, IN)

The communications intern will assist in the implementation of an overall communications and marketing strategy for the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) and specific programs.

Responsibilities:
> Manage and create content for SPJ’s social media channels, including daily engagement with respective communities. Includes keeping record of monthly analytics and using analytics to make content decisions.
> Create, update and implement marketing plans for SPJ’s programs and services, including but not limited to its annual conference, awards programs and training events. Plans should consider marketing before, during and after each program.
> Write, design, send and keep analytics for SPJ’s weekly e-newsletter, SPJ Leads and SPJ's monthly supporter newsletter, The Advocate.
> Help keep SPJ board and staff current on news related to the Society’s missions and goals.
> Work with SPJ’s board and staff, including the Director of Communications and Marketing, to create and distribute Society news releases, statements, letters and announcements.
> Assist other staff members in promoting SPJ programs and services via social media and email marketing, among others.
> Manage on-site social media coverage of SPJ’s events, including but not limited to the annual conference and the Ted Scripps Leadership Academy.
> Update and maintain SPJ’s current media lists using Meltwater software. Create new lists as needed.
> In the absence of the Director of Communications and Marketing, manage media inquiries, organize interviews and appearances by SPJ leaders, the executive director and other SPJ experts when necessary. Keep track of media inquiries and appearances.
> Assist with keeping record of advocacy efforts: Track letters and amicus briefs.
> Provide editorial content for all of SPJ’s communications vehicles, including its website, Quill magazine and other materials as necessary.
> Help with marketing of SPJ Foundation efforts, including Day of Giving and Giving Tuesday.
> Assist in posting content to SPJ.org.
> Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
> Must be a recent college graduate, with a degree in public relations, journalism, communications, marketing or related field.
> Writing and/or reporting experience required.
> Must know AP Style.
> Proficient computer skills with an understanding of how a web site works are necessary. Experience scheduling social media posts, sending marketing emails via Constant Contact or similar program are a plus.
> Should be able to manage multiple tasks, remain organized and meet deadlines.
> Decision-making, problem-solving and research skills are necessary.
> Should be able to express ideas and opinions clearly and concisely.
> Should be outgoing and self-confident with a willingness to take initiative and work cooperatively with others.
> Must have strong work ethic and a positive attitude.

Job Specifics:
> This is a paid, two-year post-graduate internship. Benefits are available.
> Intern must work a minimum of 40 hours per week.
> Some travel is required.
> Must exhibit professionalism in the office and at all outside events where SPJ is represented.
> Must be able to work with a diverse staff and be versatile at all times.
