2011 FIRST LEGO League Championship Tournament
Nebraska 4-H recently wrapped up the 2011 FIRST LEGO League season with the Championship Tournament on Saturday, February 18 at the Strategic Air and Space Museum near Ashland. Seventy-eight teams from Nebraska and western Iowa began the season in September with forty-eight qualifying through events in Omaha, Lincoln and Kearney. This year, Extension personnel and volunteers served as team coaches and mentors, event coordinators, judges and tournament volunteers from across the state. This year's theme, Food Factor, focused on food safety. In addition to designing, building and programming a robot to solve missions in the robot game, teams researched a food, its production and processing and the safety risks associated with it. As a team, they presented an innovative solution to solve one of these risks. In researching food safety, Extension-produced publications from Nebraska and many other states were important resources utilized by the teams. Many teams also visited campus to meet with faculty, staff and students in their research process and to share their solutions. The planning team wishes to thank all of you for your support of these amazing youth. If you are thinking of starting a team for next year to explore Senior Solutions, the season kicks off in early September, and the State 4-H Office and GEAR-Tech-21 team can assist you with equipment and leader training.
A special thanks to all the faculty, staff and volunteers who helped make the event a huge success.
4-H Horse Stampede
The 4-H Horse Stampede was a huge success with 130 total kids participating in the four events; horse bowl (15 teams); public speaking, demonstrations (13individuals) and an art contest (43 contestants). There was tough competition and great sportsmanship demonstrated from all the participants. All championship individuals and teams are qualified to compete at national 4-H contests. Thanks to Lena Cottle, Melissa Matulka (Horse Intern) and Kathy Anderson for leading the planning and organizing of the event.
Congratulations!
Recently, the National Wildlife Control Operators Association (NWCOA) recognized Scott Hygnstrom and Stephen Vantassel as Educators of the Year for their effort in the development of the National Wildlife Control Training Program (NWCTP). As the wildlife control industry has continued to grow, agency officials and industry leaders have stepped up requests for a standardized curriculum that can be used throughout the country to train and regulate wildlife control personnel. The NWCTP is the first curriculum to meet NWCOA’s certification standards.
Congratulations to Scott and Stephen!
