This one hour webinar on Public Deliberation is designed to introduce participants to a growing trend in citizen-driven decision-making.

A Deliberation Forum is a decision-making process that helps communities weigh the costs and benefits of various approaches to solving problems, become aware of the differences in the way others see those costs and benefits, and empower them to find courses of action that are consistent with what they hold valuable.

The deliberative process is a proven tool that not only enhances collaborative leadership skills as active listening, assertiveness, decision making and goal setting, but also reinforces oral literacy and critical thinking skills that are so important for making effective decisions in our complex society.

In addition, deliberative decision-making generates significant enthusiasm and commitment about an issue that can lead to student, staff and citizen engagement in civic projects within the classroom, school, and larger community.

Webinar Objectives:
• Introduce participants to deliberative processes.
• Help participants understand the difference between deliberative processes and other forms of group dialogue (such as discussion and debate).
• Acquaint participants with the three-part test on where and when to use deliberation versus other types of structured dialogue.
• Provide participants with a broad concept of how deliberative processes fits into other important community development practices, including naming and framing complex issues, strategic planning, and action planning.
• Give participants basic information about where to find more information and resources concerning deliberative practice and answer questions about how to best build deliberative capacity.
