We face a moment of unusual confusion in our efforts to patrol the wall of separation between church and state. We are increasingly forgetting that the wall, in its origins, was intended to protect the church from the state, not the other way around. The talk will review recent developments, and also explain how a greater attention to both history and game theory will help us reach a richer understanding of how and why to protect the wall of separation.
