Gary Rex is a member of the U.S. Foreign Service and is presently serving as the director of the International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Section of the U.S. Embassy in Kingston, Jamaica, where he has served since September 2010. He previous served as the Deputy Director of the Embassy’s Political Affairs Office in Port-au-Prince, Haiti (2009-2010); as a Political Affairs Officer covering New Zealand, the Cook Islands and Western Samoa (2007-2009); as a Consular Officer and Political Affairs Officer, specializing in human rights, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti (2005-2007); and in language and skills training at the Department of State’s Foreign Service Institute in Arlington, Virginia (2004).

After graduating from the UNL College of Law in 1978, Gary was an attorney in private practice (3 years); an attorney for the Nebraska legislature (6 years); the director of the Governor’s Policy Research Office and the Nebraska Energy Office (4 years); and attorney for the Lincoln Telephone Company/ ALLTEL Communications Company (9 years). Gary also served in the 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army (1969-1971, prior to attending UNL), and was employed as a professional scuba diver and boat captain in Key West, Florida (2001-2003, while engaged in the application process for the Foreign Service).
