chin wag - n. (Irish slang) light, informal conversation for social occasions.
The Equal Justice Society is hosting a series of informal discussions - "chinwags" - over lunch to talk about students' experiences with public interest legal work. The next chinwag will be this Thursday, November 10th and will feature two students who worked in a classic public interest area – Legal Aid.
April Kirkendall worked as an intern in the Laredo office of Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid. She worked on projects involving family law, property law, sexual harassment and discrimination cases, rural community outreach and juvenile justice issues. The position also gave her the opportunity to learn about area-specific legal issues, including colonias, migrant workers and border issues.
Justin Swanson clerked with Legal Aid of Nebraska in the Omaha office. He learned about the legal services provided by Legal Aid, including an AccessLine, ElderAccess, the Access 2 Justice Center, and Native American Law Center. After becoming senior certified through Legal Aid, Justin had the opportunity to enter evidence before a judge, counsel clients (under the supervision of a staff attorney), and take a case from initial interview to summary judgment.
