Professor and Space, Cyber, and Telecommunications Law Program Co-Director Gus Hurwitz and the program’s Executive Director Elsbeth Magilton want to make you aware of two upcoming experiences they've coordinated with the Nebraska Telecommunications Association, Comcast, and CableLabs. Their goal is to give students exposure to the business and regulatory side of a technologically-dynamic and highly regulated industry. Rural telecom providers are very sophisticated businesses operating right here in the middle of America. They are on the front lines of many regulatory challenges. These tours are designed to give students insight into these businesses and to learn about this unique practice area for attorneys. This is an excellent opportunity to expand your understanding and meet attorneys working with these companies. Students may RSVP directly to Elsbeth for either or both of these opportunities. Final RSVPs are due to me by Monday September 10. Please note, these tours will require missing classes for most students (as such 1Ls should not plan to attend this year). Please coordinate with faculty as soon as possible. 2L, 3L, and LL.M. students are eligible and encouraged to participate if interested and your schedule allows.
The first opportunity is October 12th and is a day trip to visit Northeast Nebraska Telephone. Students and faculty will leave Lincoln at 7:30 AM, arriving in Jackson, NE at NNTC at 10:00 AM for the tour. Lunch will be served in Jackson and then the group will drive back to Lincoln. A carpool will be arranged and lunch costs are provided for this day trip.
The second opportunity is a four day/three night Telecom Tour November 14-17. This tour will visit CableLabs and the Comcast Innovation Center in Denver Colorado before turning back to Nebraska to visit Hemingford Cooperative Telephone Company in Hemingford and Consolidated Companies in Paxton NE. The trip will also include a visit to a tech enabled farming operation, as well as tourist stops at Carhenge and Ollie's big game steakhouse. Hotel and transportation costs are provided (students will be asked to share hotel rooms and ride in a University van operated by Professor Hurwitz and myself). Students are responsible for the cost of food on this tour.
Interested students should RSVP directly to Elsbeth Magilton at Elsbeth@unl.edu
