Business & Financial Acumen Program

Have you ever wondered about the interactions between the C-suite and the business lawyer? On Thursday, March 7, 2019, JoAnn Martin, CEO of Ameritas and Heidi Hornung-Scherr, a partner with the Scudder Law Firm, will analyze a series of provocative corporate events. The program is designed to highlight for the law student the different perspectives the two professionals bring to the table. Professor William Fisher will moderate this conversation and spin out the hypotheticals for the business executive and corporate lawyer to tackle.

While knowledge of the relevant law is required for a corporate lawyer, business executives expect counsel to possess a degree of financial acumen or competency. Dr. Herita Akamah, an accounting professor from UNL’s Business College will shed some light on some basic accounting principles during the second part of the program, and, together with Professor Catherine Wilson, identify some tools the (non-business major) law student may use to increase her competency in these areas.

At the conclusion of the program, in the grand style commonly reserved for the reception following the closing of a major corporate merger, all participants will have a networking opportunity with beverages and heavy hors d'oeuvres.

All students are invited to attend, but there is limited seating. We believe this will be particularly helpful to students who are unsure about the business and financial competencies they need to be successful corporate lawyers. For students enrolled in the COB’s law minor program, the program will highlight the distinct contributions of the business executive and the corporate lawyer when evaluating different business decisions.

We hope to see you Thursday – We’ll start at 3:30 and finish around 5 PM.
