Data Management Plans (DMPs) are commonly required by funding agencies as part of grant submissions. Increasingly more funding agencies are also requiring data generated by a project to be shared with the broader scientific community. As one of the oldest and largest social science data archives in the world, the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) frequently assists researchers in developing data management plans that satisfy data sharing requirements. This presentation will cover the fundamentals of writing effective DMPs, including topics that should be addressed in a DMP, suggested language to include (and avoid), and additional resources to consult when writing DMPs.
About ICPSR:
The Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) is an international consortium of more than 750 academic institutions and research organizations, which includes the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Located at the University of Michigan, this consortium provides leadership and training in data access, curation, and methods of analysis for the social science research community, and maintains a data archive of more than 250,000 files of research in the social and behavioral sciences.
About the speaker:
Shane Redman, Ph.D. is a Senior Data Project Manager at ICPSR. Since joining ICPSR in 2018, Dr. Redman has worked primarily on the data acquisitions team as well as on a number of sponsored data archiving projects. In this role, he frequently works with researchers across a variety of disciplines on preparing data management plans to ensure data can be shared after the project is complete.
