On January 3, Gabriel Bruguier joined Research Partnerships at the University Libraries as assistant professor and Research Specialist Librarian. Along with other members of the department, he will support evidence synthesis research and contribute to more robust analysis of existing scholarly literature. He will also help researchers, including grad students, understand and tell the story of the impact of their research using traditional and new metrics.

“The Research Partnerships is a growing department within the Libraries and I’m excited to help it expand its reach and services,” explained Bruguier, “it is a rewarding experience to be a part of the process.”

Bruguier is excited to foster research skills in others, as it only improves his own technical skills.

“I consciously apply new research skills in my own research in Native American philosophy and history and I hope to transfer them in the process of working with others,” said Bruguier.

Currently he is working on an interdisciplinary book chapter on the history of Native peoples in Nebraska which approaches the subject from a social justice and truth and reconciliation standpoint. He is also working on a paper on Lakota language revitalization and the meaning of life, which has been accepted at the 2023 American Philosophical Association’s Pacific Division Meeting, and the 2023 Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy Annual Meeting.

In 2014 Bruguier came to University of Nebraska–Lincoln to work on his advanced degrees in Philosophy. He received his M.A. in 2015 and his doctorate degree in 2020. He also has a Licentiate in International Relations from the Universidad de las Americas-Puebla. He worked as the Education and Outreach Coordinator at the Nebraska Transportation Center/Mid America Transportation Center since 2016. There he oversaw all operations of the Roads, Rails, and Race Cars after-school program for K-12 schools in Lincoln, Macy, Santee, and Winnebago, NE. He also served as director of the NCIA/MATC Sovereign Native Youth STEM Leadership Academy and co-directed the MATC Scholars Program for Tribal College students. He wrote grants to help expand the MATC outreach, created and implemented the K-12 STEM and transportation curriculum. Bruguier hopes to continue to serve in an outreach capacity to Native American students at UNL and in high schools.

Bruguier is an enrolled member of the Yankton Sioux Tribe, and grew up in Vermillion and Sisseton, South Dakota. He is enthusiastic to get started and looks forward to working with colleagues, faculty, and students at Nebraska. He can be reached at gbruguier2@unl.edu.
