The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) designates various months and weeks throughout the year for added emphasis on safety for a particular road situation or user. October features pedestrians, teen drivers, and school bus safety.

October is Pedestrian Safety Month. At some point in the day, everyone is a pedestrian, which is why pedestrian safety is an essential part of every highway safety communications plan. Below you’ll find messaging on how drivers can keep pedestrians safe and how pedestrians can stay safe.

Teen Driver Safety Week is October 20–26, 2024. A teen’s inexperience behind the wheel makes them more susceptible to crashes, so including teen safety messaging in a traffic safety communication plan is important. Specific risk factors for teens behind the wheel include: alcohol and drug use, not wearing a seat belt, distracted driving, additional passengers, speeding, and drowsy driving. NHTSA's Teen Driver Safety Week site has materials targeted at parents or schools, and teen drivers.

A reminder, National School Bus Safety Week is October 21-25. Millions of children across the nation ride on a school bus every day – that’s why school bus safety is important in every community. Use this material to educate the public about bus stop safety, including illegal school bus passing.

As a transportation agency or transportation professional, these commemorations are a good opportunity to increase safety messaging across all platforms. Some assets are available in English and Spanish. Share this information with partner organizations to help spread the message across all communities.
