The vision of the Promoting Resilient Operations for Transformative, Efficient, and Cost-saving Transportation (PROTECT) discretionary grant program is to fund projects that ensure surface transportation resilience to natural hazards including climate change, sea level rise, flooding, extreme weather events, and other natural disasters through support of planning activities, resilience improvements, community resilience and evacuation routes, and at-risk coastal infrastructure. PROTECT is meant for surface transportation systems, including highways, public transportation, ports, and intercity passenger rail.
The next round of PROTECT applications are due February 24, 2025. Minimum awards are $100,000 with up to $876,000,000 awarded. Up to now, no Nebraska entities have been awarded a PROTECT grant.
You can explore funded projects as you consider your own application potential. All of the details are at FHWA's PROTECT Program Portal. Reach out the Nebraska Hub for assistance.
