MATHEMATICS MAJOR SPOTLIGHT

Student Name: Miles Davis
Major(s): Mathematics
Year in School: Senior

Where are you from?

I am from Shreveport, Louisiana.

What gets you excited about Math?

I get excited about math, for one, because it's not physics. It's not quite a description of the physical universe. It can be used as a tool for that but it's mysteriously subtler and probably deeper. Why does Euler's identity hold so precariously yet so perfectly? Euler's number, pi, the imaginary constant, unity, and zero: all foundational ideas conceived over millennia and yet held in such an enigmatic yet structurally sublime relationship. This is what excites me about math: the thought of some weird structural transcendence behind the dark corner.

Favorite math class or instructor? Why?

My favorite math class has been Math 817 with Professor Seceleanu. Algebra as an eyeglass into structure in general really fascinated me and affected me personally.

What are you excited about doing after graduation?

I'm excited to fuse math and other subjects into a semblance of a career.

What is a goal you have accomplished as a Husker?

I represented the Huskers as I studied abroad in Budapest as a part of BSM (Budapest Semesters in Mathematics), and this in a few ways has been the pinnacle of my college mathematics career.

What do you hope to cross off your “bucket list” in the next few years?

I hope to write a book.
