Advising Updates

Hello Math Majors,

Today is the beginning of finals week, and I want to wish you all the best of luck with your exams. I know that this is a very stress for week, so please do your best to maintain a balanced schedule between studying, work, and rest. Studies have shown that you need a full night sleep for your brain to internalize the material that you have been studying. So while the all nighter seems like an attractive studying method, it rarely works out in the end.

For your final exams, I have three big tips to help you succeed and be less stressed:

1. Give yourself plenty of time to get to your final exam. I have provided multiple links in the newsletter to the final exam schedule, so if you still aren't sure about the schedule for your exam, please review the schedule and contact your instructor. The weather and traffic can be problematic, so I strongly recommend that you leave earlier than you normally would to get to class. I say this from personal experience as there is nothing worse than being late for your final.

2. Always bring extra materials, like pencils, paper, and calculators, as you never know what can happen during a final exam. I have had pencils run out of lead and pens run out of ink, and I even had the batteries of a graphing calculator die. It is also better to be prepared than to be without.

3. Use the restroom before you get seated for your final exam. The anxiety, tension, and stress of a timed final exam can be difficult for your body, so a restroom break prior to the exam could be helpful. It is really unhelpful to need to go about halfway through the exam.

Remember, you have worked hard all semester, which is the best preparation for a cumulative final exam that you can have. One exam and one class will not define you as a student or as a person, so please take care of yourself this week.

As this is the final newsletter of the fall semester, I want to leave you with one final thought. I recommend that you take some time during the break to reflect upon how the fall semester went for you. Were there things that didn't go well or could have gone better? Was there a time that things felt chaotic or off track? If so, what was the cause of that? Could you have done something differently? If this reflection prompts questions that you don't know how to answer, please don't hesitate to contact me. You still have time to make changes for the upcoming semester.
