MATHEMATICS MAJOR SPOTLIGHT

Student Name: Grace Billig
Major: Mathematics; Child, Youth, and Family Studies
Year in School: Senior

Where are you from?

I am from Omaha.

What gets you excited about Math?

I originally fell in love with math because there was always a right answer even if there were different ways of getting there. I now get excited about math because I find it challenging and forces me to think in new abstract ways. I like learning about all the different topics and seeing how different types of math interact with each other.

Favorite math class or instructor? Why?

My favorite class I’ve taken at UNL was Number Theory. I liked it because numbers are such a core aspect of math, so seeing all characteristics of them was super interesting. It was also a lot of fun to learn all the proofs behind theorems and concepts I had been using since middle school.

What are you excited about doing after graduation?

I am excited to spend the summer traveling after I graduate in May. I’ve got trips already planned to Italy and Nashville with family. I am hoping to plan another trip with friends too. After, I am looking forward to finding a career that mashes together both Mathematics and Family Science.

What is a goal you have accomplished as a Husker?

I was able to earn grades that allowed me to keep my scholarship throughout college, which makes me super proud of all the hard work I put into both high school and college.

What do you hope to cross off your “bucket list” in the next few years?

I’ve lived in Nebraska basically my entire life, and it’s where I am comfortable. Over the next five years, I would really like to push myself out of my comfort zone and live in another state.
