Paid Summer Internships at the Center for Computational Mathematics

The Center for Computational Mathematics (CCM), formed in 2018, is becoming a leading international center for the study of applied mathematics, machine learning, signal processing, numerical analysis and related fields. Tremendous opportunities exist at the intersection of mathematics, computer science, statistics, and their scientific applications, with the lines between theory, algorithm development and software implementation often blurred. A major goal of CCM is to develop the next generation of simulation and analysis methods and to make them available to the scientific community. CCM has vibrant scientific interactions with the other four centers at the Flatiron Institute and hosts an array of meetings and workshops.

Summer Research Assistant/Associate, Scientific Computing, CCM

A seasonal, paid full-time research internship position is available at CCM in the numerical analysis group to work on projects involving the solution of partial differential equations and/or related numerical issues in signal processing, quadrature, optimization, linear algebra, and inverse problems. Current projects include biophysical data analysis, protein imaging, and fast solvers for problems in acoustics, fluid dynamics, quantum physics and electromagnetics using spatially adaptive data structures, and high order discretizations compatible with complex geometries. These require a strong background in mathematics and computer programming.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES

- To conduct independent research and/or software library development/testing under the supervision of members of the numerical analysis group within CCM.
-Perform any other relevant duties or tasks as assigned or required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education

- Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student in applied or pure mathematics, computer science, statistics, or the physical sciences.

Experience

- Required experience includes a course in differential equations (preferably PDE), probability/statistics, linear algebra, real/complex, and numerical analysis
- An ability to write documented code in a numerical programming language such as C++, Fortran, MATLAB, Python, or Julia
- Experience with parallel (OpenMP) or GPU programming is a bonus
- Please include github or other code links in your CV

Related Skills & Other Requirements

- Must enjoy working in an intense research-driven environment

Required Application Materials

- Curriculum vitae
- Transcript indicating completed courses

Deadlines

- We will start reviewing applications on 8th March, 2021. Decisions will be made by the end of March.
- Summer 2021 Internship period: June through August. Due to continued uncertainty about the COVID-19 situation, the internship will be conducted remotely rather than in-person, unless announced otherwise. (This follows our successful summer 2020 internship program.)

Summer Research Assistant/Associate, Machine Learning, CCM

A seasonal, paid, full-time research internship position is available at CCM to conduct interdisciplinary research on projects involving machine learning and computational statistics. Current projects include the study of neural network architectures, Bayesian inference, and the analysis of high-dimensional data arising in biological, chemical and physical experiments, as well as software projects such as the development of wavelet scattering transform and phase harmonic networks as part of the Kymatio toolbox (see https://kymat.io), and the continuing development of Stan, a probabilistic programming language for statistical inference.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES

- To conduct independent research and/or software library development/testing under the supervision of research staff at CCM.
- Perform any other relevant duties or tasks as assigned or required.
