Student Data Science Symposium
The Atlanta University Center (AUC) Data Science Initiative is proud to host a one-day virtual symposium to celebrate and highlight the data science work of AUC students and those that participated in the Initiative's programs. The Virtual Symposium features opportunities to engage with industry professionals and networking opportunities with students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). All student registrants will be asked to upload a resume that we will share with potential employers.

Speakers
Yamisha Bermudez, Biostatistician / Data Manager for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
- Dr. Bermudez is currently a Biostatistician contractor within the Program Services Branch of the Division of Cancer Prevention and Control at the CDC. As a Biostatistician, she is responsible for evaluating the effectiveness and efficiency of two national cancer screening programs aimed at partnering with health systems to increase cancer screening rates and reduce cancer disparities among priority populations: NBCCEDP and CRCCP.
Talitha Washington, Director of the Data Science Initiative for the Atlanta University Center Consortium, Inc.
- Dr. Washington is the inaugural Director of the Atlanta University Center Data Science Initiative. This new initiative seeks to provide data-driven solutions to current and emerging societal problems, especially as it pertains to the African American community. Dr. Washington is a Professor of Mathematics at Clark Atlanta University, and is an affiliate faculty at Morehouse College, Morehouse School of Medicine, and Spelman College.
Lorin Crawford, Senior Researcher for Microsoft Research New England
- Lorin Crawford is a Senior Researcher at Microsoft Research New England. He also maintains a faculty position in the School of Public Health as the RGSS Assistant Professor of Biostatistics with an affiliation in the Center for Computational Molecular Biology at Brown University. The central aim of his research program is to build machine learning algorithms and statistical tools that aid in the understanding of how nonlinear interactions between genetic features affect the architecture of complex traits and contribute to disease etiology.
