* All incoming PhD students are invited to a 5-day "Integration Workshop" to meet your colleagues and begin your graduate experience.
* All PhD students do a project in their second year to ensure an early introduction to research.
* Tucson has more than 300 sunny days per year and is surrounded by several mountain ranges with peaks over 9,000 feet.
Research
* Algebra and Geometry: group theory, number theory, arithmetic and algebraic geometry, topology and geometry
* Analysis: analysis and its applications, dynamical systems, geometric analysis, mathematical physics
* Applied Mathematics: computational science and numerical analysis, fluids and mechanics, mathematical biology, nonlinear waves, optical science
* Mathematics Education: K-12 education, undergraduate education, equity, outreach and informal mathematics, teacher education
* Probability and Statistics: stochastic processes, machine learning, random graphs, probability models and applications, data science
Outreach
Many of our students are involved in outreach activities including K-12 classroom visits, math circles, teacher circles, public events, and workshops.
Funding
PhD students are funded through a combination of sources including teaching assistantships, research assistantships, outreach assistantships, and fellowships. Most teaching assistants have their own sections that they teach, and have the opportunity to teach a variety of math courses. Research assistantships are supported by individual and training grants. Other funding opportunities include funding to do outreach to local schools (supported by the college, industrial sponsors, or NSF/NASA, etc.) training (such as the NIH/NIGMS Training Grant in Computational Biology), paid internships, or university initiatives (such as Graduate Access and University Fellows Program).
Job Placement
Recent PhD graduates from the UA program are employed in academic positions (Dartmouth College, Savannah College of Art and Design, Ben-Gurion University, New York University of Global Public Health), industry (Raytheon, Wells Fargo, American Express, CIT Bank, Google), and government (NSA, Mexican National Institute of Public Health).
